Comet Hunting

Thought I’d try something a bit different tonight and went comet hunting.  The target was C/2011 F1 (LINEAR), discovered last year.  Ultimately it proved just a little too faint to find, especially under the moonshine.  Either that or I was in completely the wrong place.  I’ll try again when the moon has gone. Still, it was a pleasant evening, Saturn is still in view, and I took the opportunity to re-visit some parts of the sky not seen since I first had the telescope last summer – the M57 Ring Nebula in Lyra and the famous ‘double double’ pair of binary stars, also in Lyra.  The ‘double double’ in particular separated out nicely, with good clear space visible in-between each pair of binaries.  Just a shame about that comet.
