Spring is on the way

Two things caught me by surprise last night.  Firstly, the winter constellation of Orion was at its highest in the south by around 8pm, and starting to set by midnight.  Secondly, at around 1am (yes, 1am!) I noticed a very bright star to the north and east and was too cold to thumb through the star charts trying to work out what it was.  It slowly dawned on me that it was one of the ‘summer triangle’ stars, Vega, in constellation Lyra.  Not only that, it was accompanied by a second of the summer triangle, Deneb in Cygnus.  Granted, these two never quite set all year round, but even so, perhaps spring at least isn’t too far around the corner after all.
